Calendar: Monthly Speaker’s Meeting
April 13, 2004 Ask an Audiologist Three audiologists will join us for our April 13, second Tuesday, meeting. Initially they will each speak about how the client can help them find the best aid for the client. They will also comment on the most frequently asked questions. Finally, the session will be opened up to include questions and answers. Here’s your chance to find the answers to questions you always wanted to ask. Spring Dinner at Huber’s in Indiana April 17, 2004 On Saturday, April 17, we will meet at Huber’s Restaurant, St John’s Road, Starlight Indiana. We plan to begin arriving at 3:30 pm and eat at 4:00. If the weather is nice, we will eat out doors on the patio.

Directions: Take 64 across the Sherman Minton Bridge and get off at the 2nd exit onto 265. On 265, get off at the very first exit (State St). At the end of the ramp turn right onto Paoli Rd. and go up the big hill. When you get into Floyds Knobs at the top, you will find Scottsville Rd. Turn right again and take it about 5 miles to Hubers. (One can access I265 from I65 and the Kennedy Bridge but beware of the heavy road construction.)

Legislative Coalition Kentucky, Hear Us met on Saturday March 20. A presentation explaining the roles of lobby groups and advocacy groups was made. It appears that Derbytown SHHH may continue meeting with this group without affecting its advocacy position. Paula Esterle and Ed Schickel attended on behalf of Derbytown SHHH. We need other volunteers to attend these meetings.
KCDHH Education Outreach and Inclusion for the Hard of Hearing study group met on March 25. Mary Lee Nelson, Paula Esterle and Ed Schickel attended for Derbytown SHHH. Six issues were added to the group’s proposal:
These issues were discussed in an open public forum held at Piccadilly’s on Saturday March 27. The study group welcomes additional feedback from you. Contact the KCDHH office, Anita Dowd, to voice your feelings and suggestions.
Newcomers Volunteers are needed to greet newcomers as they arrive, introduce them to the group and connect them to a member who could act as a resource/mentor for them. Dale has agreed to head a committee. Are you willing to assist others? Please consider volunteering. Please contact him to talk about ways to greet and assist our new members. We have had a number of newcomers who have attended one or two meetings. We do not have their names or a way to contact them. We don’t even know why they have not returned. We need to do a better job of greeting and welcoming people. We need a way to mentor them. Remember your first meeting? What was good and not so good? How can you share the positive with a newcomer? Will you welcome a newcomer?
Ky. Center for the Arts We have received an offer from Stacy Ridgeway and the Ky. Center for the Arts to participate in a pilot program, “Access KCard”. Using the “KCard” we can purchase up to 10 tickets for each of the remaining performances of the Louisville Orchestra, Louisville Ballet and the Ky. Center on a first come first served basis. The tickets would cost only $10 each.
Because these are first come first served, we need to apply for tickets ASAP. If you are interested, let Ed know how many tickets you want and for which performances.
Other Projects Ed represented Derbytown SHHH at a presentation by Stacy Ridgeway at the Ky. Center for the Arts on March 25. He will also be attending an ADA training on March 30-31. Hearing Assistive Technology will be presented at the KAN Conference on April 5 and at an AARP Healthfair in Mayfield, KY on May 20.
