Our picnic will be at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 4, at Briar Hill Park, which is on Briar Hill Rd. off Highway 22 in Oldham County (near Pewee Valley). This is the same park where we had the picnic last year. Please email Hazel Tucker as soon as possible and tell her how many are coming from your family and what you will bring. We will have hot dogs, barbecue, and hamburgers; however if enough people agree to bring barbecue, we will eliminate the hamburgers. Right now we need another pot of barbecue. We also need 4 packages of hot dog buns, 1 gallon of lemonade, and ice. Other suggestions are broccoli casserole, corn pudding, macaroni and cheese, fruit salad (Mary Lee is bringing one dish of fruit salad, but we need another one, as it is always popular), and desserts of any kind. No soft drinks are needed this time.
Please remember that we will NOT have our regular speaker's meeting this month. Come to the picnic instead; your social committee is planning a wonderful meal.
Election of Officers
We extend our sympathy to Robbie Deddens, whose mother died recently. Please keep Robbie and his family in your prayers as they go through this difficult time.
Marvin Kruer fell twice on Saturday (one fall right after the other), had temporary memory loss, cut his head, and sustained a black eye. He is home from the hospital now, after four days of tests that showed nothing more serious than dehydration. He is feeling pretty good, according to Reva.
The yard sale netted $105.45 for the chapter. My thanks to all who helped -- Paula Esterle, Judy Rogers, Merle Williams, and Robbie Deddens, and everyone who donated items for the sale! Things not sold are being kept for the next time there is a yard sale somewhere. To be quite frank, I don't think this is worth doing in terms of raising money for the chapter. But then I don't like yard sales!

On August 18-28, Derbytown SHHH and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) will have a Hearing Assistive Technology (HAT) booth at the Kentucky State Fair. Last year almost 1,000 people visited our interactive display. In general, our booth, which is a 20 X 20 booth open on 3 sides and manned by 3-5 volunteers each shift, will display and demonstrate multiple Hearing Assistive Technologies (HAT). We will have various communication devices including CapTel (captioned telephones) and specialized alerting devices from bed shakers and smoke alarms to door bell and telephone flashers. Our booth will have information on captioned TV, movies (open captioned and rear window captioning) and live captioned performances. We will also demonstrate infrared and looped TV listening devices. With the help of NOAA, we hope to include scripted emergency weather notification systems. If you would like to volunteer to work in the booth, contact Mary Lee as soon as possible.

Stonybrook, 2745 S. Hurstbourne Pkwy., has scheduled "Stealth" with rear-window captions (RWC) for Friday, July 29 through Thursday, Aug. 4. You can always check for times for RWC films at the Showcase Cinemas but it is a good idea to call the theater (499-6658) on the day you want to attend to make sure the schedule hasn't changed and that the RWC equipment is working properly. "Stealth" is a sci-fi action adventure film starring Josh Lucas, Jessica Biel, and Jamie Foxx. It's rated PG-13.
Showcase de Luxe 16 (on Preston Crossing, just off Preston Highway behind Lowe's) has scheduled "Must Love Dogs" with RWC for Friday, July 29 through Sunday, July 31 (and probably longer, but the theater hasn't posted its schedule beyond Sunday). This is a romantic comedy starring Diane Lane and John Cusack. It's rated PG-13. The phone number at Showcase de Luxe is 961-9700. Again, check the above web site and/or call the theater for times.
Anytime anyone goes to an RWC movie, we would all appreciate some feedback on the RWC experience as well as the movie itself.

Aug. 13 Music Theatre Louisville will present "Jesus Christ Superstar" at Iroquois Amphitheater (in Iroquois Park near the intersection of New Cut Road and Kenwood Drive) at 8 p.m. This performance will be captioned and sign interpreted for hard of hearing/deaf people. To buy tickets, call Ticketmaster at (502) 361-3100, log onto Ticketmaster or visit any Ticketmaster outlet. Tickets may also be purchased at the Broadway in Louisville office at 611 West Main Street or at the amphitheater box office. Call (502) 368-5063 before you go to make sure the box office is open. Be sure to mention that you need to be seated where you can see the captions.
Aug. 26 & 27 America's first hearing impaired comedian, Kathy Buckley, will be the headliner at two special comedy shows at the historic Pioneer Playhouse (840 Stanford Rd., Danville KY), the state's first and oldest outdoor amphitheatre, at 8:30 p.m. both nights. The cost is $10, and reservations can be made by calling (859) 236-2747. Reservations are not accepted by email. Buckley, a "Tonight Show" veteran whose "No Labels, No Limits" show has aired nationwide on PBS, is an inspirational comedian, motivational speaker and active humanitarian. Buckley was wrongly labeled retarded as a child, run over by a jeep, pronounced dead by paramedics and diagnosed with cervical cancer - all before the age of 30! Buckley's powerful punch lines make for an inspirational evening of standup comedy. These shows are rated G. (Editor's note: We have been told this will be sign interpreted but at press time, we are not sure if they will have captioning or assistive listening devices (ALDs) for the hard of hearing. They have been advised of their need for this by the KCDHH and are checking into getting these accommodations. So if you call for tickets, be sure to ASK for whatever you need!)
There will be no meeting at Piccadilly this month. Piccadilly is charging us a non-use fee when few or no one shows up. It would be good if someone would be willing to lead us by finding a new restaurant and renew this wonderful informal Saturday meeting.
Some how, some way you discovered SHHH and Derbytown. Perhaps you found us by chance or perhaps you struggled alone for years. Nevertheless, you found friendship, information and support. You found that you were not alone and you discovered new technology that helps you.
SHHH was available because one man (Rocky Stone) opened his home to other HOH people. Derbytown was available because four women sat down together to talk about their hearing loss. Ultimately, they reached out to you.
I am asking you now, that if you have been helped by SHHH or Derbytown in any way, to consider those who have not heard of us. I am asking that you consider all of the Hard of Hearing people in Kentuckiana. I am asking that you support our Kentucky State Fair Outreach. Please understand this is not a membership drive. This is a program to educate Kentuckiana about HOH issues and resources. Our goal is just to help people become aware and to open new doors.
We need your financial and physical support now! We need a contribution of $5, $10, $20 or more from you as soon as possible. We need you to volunteer some of your time at our fair booth. Others stepped forward for you. Will you step forward for others.
