July 15 The KCDHH Education, Outreach and Inclusion for the Hard of Hearing study group will meet at 10:00 a.m. in Frankfort to finalize plans for our Hearing Assistive Technology (HAT House) booth at the Kentucky State Fair.
July 17 Music Theatre Louisville will present "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" at Iroquois Amphitheater at 8 p.m. This production will be captioned and sign interpreted for the deaf/HOH and audio described for the blind. There are no group discounts for this production. Tickets are $20 for adults or $15 for senior citizens (those who are 60 or older). Melanie Magruder will buy tickets in the captioned section for all those who want to go if you send a check to her by Monday, July 12. Her address is 8012 Broadfern Dr., Louisville 40291. Melanie will distribute tickets at the meeting on Tuesday, July 13. If you want Melanie to buy your tickets but you can't be at the July 13 meeting, she will meet you at the amphitheater just before the performance on July 17 and give you your tickets there. If you won't know until the last minute whether you can go, or if you just prefer to buy your tickets yourself, you can do so by calling the amphitheater box office at 368-5063 or go online to Music Theater Louisvilleand click on Ticketmaster. Or you can call Ticketmaster at 361-3100.
July 24 We will meet for an informal dinner at Piccadilly Cafeteria, 133 S. Hurstbourne Parkway near the intersection with Shelbyville Rd., at 2 p.m.
August 12 We will have our annual summer picnic at 6:30 p.m. at Briar Hill Park off Highway 22, near Pewee Valley. A map will be included in our next newsletter and on our web site. There will be no second Tuesday speaker's meeting in August.
To staff the booth we will need all hands on deck as there are over 100 slots to fill. We need three or four people at the booth at all times to monitor the items in the house (TV with captions, visual alerting systems, TTY etc) as well as give out information and freebies at the front tables. The devices will have signs which will explain them but shepherding people in the right direction will be necessary. Plus, as always there will be much to take in before or after helping out. Who does not love the handmade crafts or a caramel apple?
Shifts will be as follows: Morning 9-1:30 PM; Midday 1:30-6 PM; and Evening 6-10 PM. Please let me know when you’d like to work and how much flexibility you have. If you’d like to work more than one shift (or work early and late with a break in the middle to take in the sights of the fair), that would be even better. We will be sending out free admission and parking vouchers by US mail for volunteers so respond with your email, regular mailing address and phone number. Please return the form below so I can place you on the schedule. Feel free to invite others to volunteer or to be sure and visit the booth while they are attending the fair.
The HAT House will be located in the South Wing in the Main Street Area. We are also trying to coordinate a booth in the Health Horizons Area which will offer Free Hearing Screenings so watch for that as well.
This is an exciting new project for us and we hope to expand upon it next year. Thanks for your support.

July 23 KCDHH Commission Meeting
August 19-29 SHHH will co-sponsor a booth at the Kentucky State Fair, and volunteers are needed. The following note is from Paula Esterle, our state coordinator:The year 2004 marks the 100th Kentucky State Fair and the KCDHH is sponsoring a booth in conjunction with KAD, Hamilton Relay and SHHH as well as individual contributors. We are really excited about the new approach to the fair booth, which we believe will enlighten and inspire people. Our walk through “HAT House” will demonstrate Hearing Assistive Technology for people who do not hear well. This will be a unique way to educate the public and hopefully reach people who are in need of this technology.
If you would like to volunteer to work at the state fair, please fill out this form and return it to Paula:

The University of Louisville Program in Audiology is conducting research on audiologic rehabilitation in adults with hearing loss who wear hearing aids. Audiologic rehabilitation involves training in speechreading (lipreading, auditory listening, and communication strategies). Most people with hearing loss do not use all of the strategies available to them to improve their listening. Free group audiologic rehabilitation classes will be offered as part of the research program. The researchers are looking for participants with the following characteristics:
Participants must be between the ages of 55 and 75
All participants must wear two hearing aids with at least six months' experience
Participants must have normal or corrected vision of at least 20/40
Participants must not currently have active ear disease (i.e., ear infection)
A few other screenings will be performed at the first visit to determine if the prospective participant will qualify for the study
If you have any questions, or if you are interested in participating, please contact Jan Leddy at 502-852-3990 or
