The chapter newsletter for June 2005:

Please Note: We have moved our meeting from the Louisville Library to St Leonard’s Elementary School Library, 440 Zorn Avenue. See bottom of this page for a map. From I 71 take the Zorn Avenue exit and turn south (away from the river). Look for the school on the right as you approach the top of the hill. From Frankfort Avenue or Brownsboro Road, take Hillcrest south (near the waterworks). Hillcrest becomes Zorn. St Leonard’s is near the Brownsboro Rd. intersection.

June 14 Speaker's meeting

Bob Stuckey is our KCDHH Commissioner. He will talk about his role role on the Commission and how KCDHH impacts our lives. There will be time for question and answers. This is our opportunity to tell Bob how we want him to represent us.

Raffle at national convention

We will make up a basket of Kentucky items to be raffled at the convention. Every year we have a raffle of all kinds of items to raise money for national activities and outreach efforts. Aside from these "baskets" from different states, people also bring craft items they have made, and some things that are just unusual finds. Someone may consider some Ky. author books: Barbara Kingsolver, Silas House, Wendell Berry, Bobbi M Mason, Jesse Stuart, Liz Curtis Higgs. Or Kentucky-made jam, honey, bbq sauce, candies, Derby glass, shot glass, small bottle of whiskey, etc.

We always have a great time looking at the raffle items and some even win things. Mary Lee won a really beautiful crocheted afghan two years ago!

If you can donate something for the Kentucky basket, bring it to the meeting in June, or contact Ed about how to get the item to us. Think of the Kentucky shops and the things they carry.

And if you have something you have made that you would like to have raffled off separately from the basket, we would be happy to have that along also!

Informal Dinner at Piccadilly’s

There will be no meeting at Piccadilly’s this month. The 25th precedes the convention week and we have had fewer and fewer people attending. Piccadilly’s is charging us a non-use fee when few or no one shows up.

It would be good if someone would be willing to lead us by finding a new restaurant and renew this wonderful informal Saturday meeting.

WILL YOU HELP US

Some how, some way you discovered SHHH and Derbytown. Perhaps you found us by chance or perhaps you struggled alone for years. Nevertheless, you found friendship, information and support. You found that you were not alone and you discovered new technology that helps you.

SHHH was available because one man (Rocky Stone) opened his home to other HOH people. Derbytown was available because four women sat down together to talk about their hearing loss. Ultimately, they reached out to you.

I am asking you now, that if you have been helped by SHHH or Derbytown in any way, to consider those who have not heard of us. I am asking that you consider all of the Hard of Hearing people in Kentuckiana. I am asking that you support our Kentucky State Fair Outreach. Please understand this is not a membership drive. This is a program to educate Kentuckiana about HOH issues and resources. Our goal is just to help people become aware and to open new doors.

We need your financial and physical support now! We need a contribution of $5, $10, $20 or more from you as soon as possible. We need you to volunteer some of your time at our fair booth. Others stepped forward for you. Will you step forward for others.

Send your tax free donation to: Derbytown SHHH

KCDHH CAP-TEL:

KCDHH is now accepting applications for Cap-Tel in KY. 1-800-372-2907 (V/TTY)

We are told that there is no longer a waiting list. Get your applications in soon.

Thanks

Thank You KCDHH This past month KCDHH sought out extra funding to eliminate the waiting list for CapTel phones. To my knowledge this is unprecedented. Many more people now enjoy CapTel phones. Dr. Scoggins appeared on several radio shows regarding hearing loss. They are responding to our requests to reach out to HOH via standard media. We are grateful for KCDHH’s efforts.

Thanks Hazel Thanks to Hazel and her social committee for the work on our Spring Dinner. It was a fun night.
