From Our President:

It is a pleasure for me to write these brief comments once again, as I was the editor for the Association for the Deaf many years ago. Last month you were introduced to our new officers: Vice President Carlene Ballard (see Carlene's profile below), Secretary Marilyn Fenwick, and Treasurer Pat Flaherty. The hard work and dedication of our previous officers makes it possible for the new officers to carry on Derbytown's mission. I would like to invite everyone, old or new, to attend our regular speaker's meeting on the second Tuesday of this month as well as an informal lunch on the fourth Saturday of this month at which we will have the opportunity to do some brainstorming on important issues that will face us over the next two years. (See details concerning both meetings below.) We need to work together on many issues so that we can make a difference in the lives of hard of hearing people in this state.
—Bob Stuckey

October Speaker's Meeting

On Tuesday, October 11, Derbytown SHHH will host a panel of audiologists who will discuss issues that they feel affect most hard of hearing people. They will then respond to questions from the audience. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at St. Leonard Elementary School Library, 440 Zorn Avenue (South of the VA Hospital and North of Brownsboro Road). This meeting will be real-time captioned. Although the meeting is free and open to the public, first-time attendees are asked to let us know you are coming by contacting Ed Schickel or Paula Esterle.

Informal Lunch and Brainstorming Session

All Derbytowners are invited to a late lunch at Piccadilly Cafeteria, 133 S. Hurstbourne Pkwy. (this is the one near the intersection of Hurstbourne and Shelbyville Rd.), at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 22. After lunch, we'll discuss future plans for the chapter. Bob Stuckey will send out an email before Oct. 22 advising us of the issues we need to discuss. New and immediate past officers and board members particularly need to be there, but all members are invited to participate in this lunch and discussion.

Future Speaker's Meetings

On Tuesday, November 8, Dr. Jill Preminger will discuss the impact of hearing loss on all family members. This meeting will take place at St. Leonard Elementary School Library at 6:30 p.m. Look for more information in the next newsletter.

Meet our New Vice President

(Editor's note: Last month, our new vice president, Carlene Ballard, didn't get a chance to introduce herself, so here it is now)

I live in rural Nelson County, am married, and have two daughters and one granddaughter. I work in our family cabinet business, Chris's Custom Cabinets, in Bardstown. I enjoy boating on Lake Cumberland, horse camping and trail riding, motorcycle riding, and exercising. I hope to be of some assistance to our president, offer support to our group, and especially be friends and reach out to others in need with hearing loss. —Carlene Ballard
